Why We Built Software for Microgreens and Mushroom Farms

Why We Built Software for Microgreens and Mushroom Farms

When we started working with microgreens and mushrooms, we quickly learned something that many small farm owners eventually discover:

Running the farm is only part of the job.

You have to manage production, inventory, customers, orders, deliveries, traceability, sanitation, quality, costs, scheduling, and the endless amount of information that comes with operating a growing business.

And when you start looking for software specifically designed for microgreens or mushrooms, the options become very different from what you might expect.

There are specialized solutions.

But they are often niche, expensive, and designed around a limited set of workflows.

For a small or growing farm, that creates a difficult choice:

Do you spend a significant amount of money on specialized farm software?

Do you settle for generic business tools that don't really understand your operation?

Or do you start building your own spreadsheets, systems, and workarounds?

We chose a fourth option.

We built the software we wanted to have.

We Didn't Build This From a Whiteboard

Greens & Shrooms Farm isn't just the name behind the software.

It's where the idea came from.

We operate a real microgreens and mushroom business. We have experienced the operational problems ourselves.

We've had to think about production.

We've had to think about inventory.

We've had to think about customers and orders.

We've had to think about deliveries.

We've had to think about traceability.

We've had to think about consistency, sanitation, quality, and compliance.

And we've had to think about the economics of being a small business.

That experience changed the way we looked at farm management software.

We didn't want to create another generic agricultural application.

We wanted to create purpose-built software for microgreens and mushroom farms, designed around the way these businesses actually operate.

Why Microgreens and Mushroom Software?

Microgreens and mushrooms are specialized agricultural businesses.

They have unique production cycles, inventory requirements, product varieties, scheduling challenges, customer demands, and traceability considerations.

Generic farm software doesn't necessarily understand those realities.

And software designed for larger agricultural operations can be far more than a small or medium-sized farm actually needs—or far more expensive than it can justify.

That's where we saw an opportunity.

We wanted to create a platform that understands the specific operational needs of microgreens and mushroom farms, while still providing the broader business tools needed to run a professional company.

Not just production.

Not just inventory.

Not just customers.

The business as a whole.

That's what we mean by specialized microgreens software and mushroom software.

The goal isn't to take a generic farm management platform and add a few fields for mushrooms or microgreens.

The goal is to build around the actual workflows these businesses use.

More Tools Under One Roof

One of our core beliefs is simple:

You shouldn't have to build your business around a collection of disconnected software subscriptions.

A microgreens or mushroom farm might need tools for:

  • Production management

  • Crop and variety tracking

  • Inventory management

  • Customer management

  • Order management

  • Delivery planning

  • Traceability

  • Batch records

  • Sanitation

  • Quality control

  • Financial reporting

  • Business analytics

  • Task and workflow management

  • Business data and reporting

  • Backups

When those capabilities are scattered across different applications, the costs aren't limited to monthly subscriptions.

There is also the cost of managing them.

Entering the same information multiple times.

Moving data between systems.

Keeping records synchronized.

Learning different interfaces.

Maintaining different accounts.

And trying to create a complete picture of your business from pieces of information stored in different places.

We believe there is a better way.

One specialized platform can connect more of those workflows together.

The Goal Isn't Cheap Software

Let's be clear about something:

We don't do cheap.

We know the value of what we're building.

This platform represents our experience operating a farm, our technology experience, our time, our development work, and our commitment to building something that can genuinely help another business.

We don't believe in artificially lowering the value of that work just to say we're the cheapest option.

But we do believe in being fair.

Fair to the customer.

Fair to the work required to build and maintain the platform.

And, most importantly, fair to the value we are trying to bring back to your business.

Our goal isn't to make software cheaper.

Our goal is to make your technology investment work harder for you.

Where the Savings Can Come From

The value of integrated farm management software isn't simply the price of the subscription.

It's what happens when multiple business functions work together.

For example, imagine a farm that currently pays for several different systems to handle accounting, CRM, project management, analytics, document processing, backups, and route planning.

≈ $353/month

That's approximately $4,236 per year before considering the time and administrative overhead required to operate all of those systems.

And this is where an important distinction comes in.

The savings aren't necessarily about replacing every specialized application.

Some businesses will still need specialized accounting, logistics, or other professional tools.

The point is that when multiple users, multiple workflows, and multiple business functions can exist within one platform, a growing farm has an opportunity to consolidate technology costs and reduce unnecessary complexity.

That's one of the reasons we designed our software to bring more capabilities together instead of creating another tool that solves only one small part of the operation.

We Believe Small Companies Should Have Leverage

This is probably the most important reason we built this platform.

Large companies have resources.

They can afford specialized software.

They can hire people to manage systems.

They can build custom applications.

They can have entire departments dedicated to operations, logistics, compliance, data, and administration.

A small business might have one person doing all of those things.

We don't believe that means small companies should have to operate with minimum tools.

We believe they should have leverage.

Technology can give a small team capabilities that would otherwise require considerably more people, time, or money.

That doesn't mean technology replaces people.

It means people can accomplish more with the resources they already have.

That's the advantage we want to give small and medium-sized farms.

Compliance Shouldn't Be an Afterthought

As a farm becomes more professional, documentation and compliance become increasingly important.

Traceability.

Batch records.

Sanitation.

Quality control.

Production records.

Customer information.

Product movement.

These aren't simply bureaucratic requirements.

They are part of building a business that can operate consistently and earn the trust of its customers.

That's why we believe compliance-related workflows should be considered when designing microgreens and mushroom farm software—not added as an afterthought.

The information you're already generating while running your farm should become useful business data.

Your records should help you operate better, not simply exist because someone told you that you needed them.

We Know What It Feels Like to Be on the Other Side

We didn't start this project because we wanted to sell software to farmers.

We started it because we are farmers too.

We know what it feels like to watch every expense.

We know what it feels like when growth creates more work.

We know what happens when spreadsheets start multiplying.

We know how difficult it can be to justify another software subscription.

We know that every dollar spent on technology is a dollar that isn't being spent somewhere else.

And we know that small businesses often have to make decisions that large companies don't even have to think about.

That's why we decided to divide our own portfolio between farming and technology.

The farm gives us real-world experience.

Technology gives us the ability to turn that experience into something useful for others.

Bringing Technology Back to the Community

There are tools that small businesses simply cannot justify building themselves.

A custom system can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Hiring developers isn't realistic for many small farms.

Building and maintaining an internal technology team isn't realistic either.

But that doesn't mean those businesses don't deserve the benefits of good technology.

We believe they do.

By building one platform and making it available to multiple farms, we can spread the cost of development across a community of businesses that would otherwise have limited access to that level of technology.

That's the leverage we're trying to create.

Built for the Farm, Not Around the Farm

Our philosophy is simple:

Software should adapt to the business.

The business shouldn't have to completely change the way it operates just to fit the software.

That's particularly important for microgreens and mushroom farms because these businesses have operational details that generic business software simply wasn't designed to understand.

We're building around those details.

We're building around production.

We're building around products.

We're building around customers.

We're building around inventory.

We're building around orders and deliveries.

We're building around traceability and compliance.

We're building around financial information and business analytics.

And we're building around something that is often forgotten in software development:

the person who actually has to use it.

Leveling the Playing Field

We don't expect a small farm to become a giant corporation.

And we don't think it needs to.

The goal is to give small and medium-sized businesses some of the advantages that larger companies already have:

better information, better organization, better visibility, better control, and better leverage.

That's what technology should do.

It should amplify what a business is capable of doing.

This Is Why We Built It

We built this software because we needed better tools ourselves.

We built it because specialized microgreens software and mushroom software can be difficult to justify for a growing business.

We built it because we didn't want to accept that small companies should have to operate with the minimum possible technology.

We built it because we believe multiple business capabilities can work better together.

We built it because compliance, traceability, production, inventory, customers, orders, and logistics shouldn't exist in completely disconnected worlds.

And we built it because we believe small businesses deserve leverage.

We're not trying to be the cheapest.

We're trying to be fair to the value we provide.

If our technology can help you save time, reduce unnecessary technology costs, operate more efficiently, maintain better records, and ultimately keep more resources available to grow your business, then we've accomplished what we set out to do.

From Our Farm to Yours

'

Greens & Shrooms Farm started as a farm.

Technology became another part of our journey.

Now we're bringing that technology back to the farming community.

Because we know what it's like to build a business from the ground up.

And we believe you shouldn't have to build yours with minimum tools.

Whether you're running a microgreens operation, a mushroom farm, or both, we built this software around a simple idea:

Your software should work for your farm—not force your farm to work around your software.
